Bought the Mavic 2 Pro roughly a month ago. Flying it much during daylight. I tried nighttime flying and the first warning I get, which is mentioned in the user manual, is Obstacle Avoidance disabled due to low light. The light on the bottom was turned on but the drone was flying side to side almost out of control, almost hitting my house. I was able to control it and land it safely. Is the Mavic 2 Pro designed for high altitude night photography? What settings should I check? Thank you for your time reading this.

Someone will be along soon. Here’s the full online only DJI manual for your drone. Check it out :

Welcome to the Mavic 2 Family

The Obstacle avoidance disabled is normal for night flying and has nothing to do with the side to side action that is most likely because you were flying to low between the houses , which can be problematic in keeping your GPS signal .

Try another flight at night , with a better view of the sky and dont be alarmed about the low light warning.

The obstacle avoidance system will struggle in low light levels as they use stereoscopic cameras. The downward facing light is designed to switch on when the light level is low to enable the camera to see the ground more clearly. From 30-meters and below the aircraft uses infrared sensors to calculate its height above the ground but it can be fooled by reflective or surface areas with little detail… such as tarmac at night.

The issue you found may be a result of the obstacle avoidance sensors or loss of GPS lock if your aircraft was close to your house. The flight logs from your flight may give a definitive answer if you want to upload them to the forum. We have several pilots here who can read and interpret the logs for you.

If you do a search on the forum for ‘Retrieving logs’ you should find a link to the article explaining the process.

The side to side issue is likely lack of GPS lock.

I do a lot of night flying and see the Obstacle Avoidance Disabled message often, and it has never resulted in bad GPS lock.

Note, however, that you need to be especially careful in such a situation, with the double combo of low visual sight at night and now a lack of obstacle avoidance. So flying close to buildings where you might lose GPS lock is a triple no-no.

Thank you so much for the information. Definitely will try a better setting for night flying. Another question - camera settings in the remote controller. The user manual mentions it but does not going into detail. Where can I get those details? One reason is I have not found a way to adjust the contrast.
