As an FYI to all - that waiver linked above was rescinded May 17, 2021, and is no longer valid. Part 107 pilots now need night training and a passing score on the night section of the recurrent 107 test. The FAA is revamping the full 107 test to include night ops.

Not quite...

The article above doesn't refer to 107.29 waivers. It refers to the process (still current in some cases) of flying at night in controlled airspace.

FAA Form 7711-1, 14 CFR Part 107 is still required for any LAANC authorization that doesn't allow night operations. For the most part, LAANC providers do offer that. And 107.41 COAs, if it covers night ops, are permission in and of themselves.

As far as the FAA revamping the 107 (both initial and recurrent), that was done on 4/6/21. All current 107 related tests and training taken and passed after 4/5/21 qualify the pilot for night operations. The only other requirement for night ops is appropriate strobe lighting. Those must be seen 3 statute miles.

Recreational flights are still not permitted at night in controlled airspace.
