No map on the Smart Controller?

I was reading a review of the new Smart Controller and this is what the reviewer said:

"I couldn’t get the map to display on the Smart Controller, I think this is because you need to use your phone as a hotspot"

Is this correct?

Having the same issue. Chatting with support they told me to connect to the internet before flight to cache my location but I tried that and as soon as I disconnected my map vanished.

Resolved. You have to tether your phone to get continuous map access. Not a show stopper for me. Just one more thing to do but it does automatically connect if you have your hotspot turned on device.
