Bottom Line: A month ago I went to a large park and before I could fly the drone require me to update my firmware. After this, RTH would not work and I no longer have a setting to enable precision landing.

More background: Prior to updating my firmware, RTH worked well. Once, I lost a connection at only 900 feet out and it did start to RTH properly. I checked DJI assistant 2 and it seems to be the latest version. Now, whenever I hit RTH my Mavic 2 Pro, it starts to land where ever it is. I tested in 3 different test flights at about 200 feet high and 800 feet away - same result. There used to be an option for setting precision landing this under advanced in the visual navigation setting. However, this option is no longer there. I do have the RTH height setting at 150 feet. The compass was calibrated and I was getting 17 satellites.

Anyone else had this problem? Suggested solutions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I do remember reading something about being within a certain distance from the home point that it will land where it is so maybe you are too close?

It sounds like you are conflating different systems and settings. If it simply lands when RTH is engaged then there are several possibilities:
  1. If the aircraft is within 5 m of the home point then it will just land;
  2. If the aircraft is 5 - 20 m from the home point and "RTH at current altitude" is not enabled then it will just land;
  3. If the failsafe action is set to "Land" rather than "RTH" then on loss of signal it will just land.
Precision landing is automatic if the appropriate conditions are met - it has nothing to do with the RTH/failsafe settings.

Well, I met the first 2 issues in my test run. I've flown a far number of times the same route and RTH has worked before. I suspect it's something as simple as the failsafe settings. They must have reset with the firmware update. So, I'll double check possibility 3. I'll report back my results.
Thank you very much for taking the time to respond.

And one other question - when you say that you "hit RTH my Mavic 2 Pro", is that in the app or on the RC? If it is on the app then are you sure that you are hitting the RTH button, not the autoland button adjacent to it?

Hmm. I thought I was hitting the correct button. I am using the app and not the controller. I remember having to swipe the slider in order to get it to activate. Let me go outside and try this again just to be sure. I will also try the controller to see if that works.

In the meantime, here are the settings I have in the go 4 app

App version 4.3.36
Current firmware 01.00.0510
Forward and backward obstacle avoidance normal (statement at top of visual navigation settings page)
Enable Forward and Backward Obstacle Sensing is enabled
Display Radar Chart is enabled
In advanced settings

Enable downward revision positioning is enabled
Landing protection is enabled
RTH obstacle detection is enabled

Other Settings

RTH at current altitude is disabled
RTH equals 60 meters
RC signal loss equals return to home is enabled
Compass equals excellent
Smart return home for low battery is enabled

. It did not require that you update the firmware, it only recommended it. However, it is not clear.

Are you sure that you were 800' away and that you were more than 66' away from the Home Point and that the Home Point was locked and static and not dynamic?

Anytime you update the firmware or software you should check _all_ settings to make sure that they did not change.

OK. I'm stupid stupid stupid. I haven't had the drone but for a few months and did fly it for a few weeks.
Yes, you're correct, I hit the landing button but not the RTH button. I'm embarrassed but the best lessons are the one's hardest learned.

Thanks to all for being patience and help.

Good point about checking settings after firmware update.

We all make mistakes and hopefully it might help others here since you're certainly not the first person to make this error.

You are not stupid, stupid, stupid. You are learning, learning, learning. And you have the perfect attitude about it all. Which permits the rest of us to learn, learn, learn. Thank you for sharing your experience!

I've noticed whenever I do an update my settings are wiped and everything is reset to default factory settings. The RTH default is way too low for wooded hill country where I fly. After update go thru all of the menus and then do a flight check low and close by before taking off to the wild blue yonder.

One more RTH critical detail - how light is it? I shoot sunsets a lot and launch in the last 10-15 minutes before the sun fully sets. At launch a Precision Landing position is determined and announced but often times by the time I'm done shooting, the skies have dimmed and Precision Landing is not attempted. However, during the day when all is very bright, precision landing works like a champ. There must be some inability of the cameras/sensors to resolve details enough for Precision Landing below some level of light.

It's an easy mistake, don't beat yourself up,I've done it twice(without my glasses on)no harm though, realized it in plenty of time

Thank you all for being so kind about my lapse. Jonathan, I also appreciate the caution about low light conditions. I would not have thought about that.
