There's a tremendous amounts of power and inertia involved in those ship movement operations. Back before 9/11, I was able to do a couple of runs with a cousin who was a senior pilot on the Mississippi River between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. From my perspective, it was a couple of hours of slow moving but nearly constant terror. 100,000 ton objects are difficult to handle, even with a pair tugs.
