No, the phones wifi has nothing to do with the drones range.

Actually it could. The RC uses WiFi frequencies and has to compete with your phone for a channel. Even when you don't have your phone connected to a WiFi network, it isn't completely passive.

You could fly in a straight line multiple times, with the same weather / winds etc. and test it out yourself.

Range is extended by not being distracted by email, pop-ups, and/or phone calls...at a minimum.

Your battery life on the phone was also be longer shutter off those other items draining life on the battery.
