Just picked up and tested a Zoom H2n. Very inexpensive and small unit. 2 AA batteries and 20 hours of run time. Can be set to either uni or omi directional pickup. XY to one side and mid side to the other (using only two mics for the MS). Ok, it wouldn't stand up to Adele's lyrics but it does an amazing job of picking up ambient sound with very little floor noise. Can be placed on a stand via 1/4 20 threads. The whole unit fits comfortable in the palm of my hand. Has a host of resolutions to include 48K 24bit wav for standard video.

We use something very similar and carry it on the drone in the storm to capture the Thunder , than we use the software Program from Adobe called Audition to take out all the sounds of the drone which leaves only the Thunder in the back ground , works pretty good but takes a little time to get use to.

You can do some very cool things with it. for some amazing natural effects.

Here you go:

Wow!!! That is a great! Never considered taking one up with the drone. Appreciate the reference to Audition but I started audio recording about 20 years ago. I use Cubase and Wavelab, both by Steinberg. Got a ton of plugs by Waves and Isotope. If you can get the drone noise out you are really doing something!!! That thing puts out a broadband (relative to audible spectrum) spectrum that is a booger to filter out. Since I don't usually need to synchronize the video and audio, I've taken to setting out the recorder by itself for five or ten minutes prior to taking off. I bought a clap board and one of these days I'm going to try syncing with that. BTW, wavelab plugs work inside of Premiere Pro. They make it a little doggy but in a pinch they work. I tried using Audition but it and Premiere would fight with my audio interface (Presonus) and it was just as easy to perform the tasks separately using Steinberg.
