Remote Controller: small connector bracket frustration

Is anyone else frustrated by the very small square plastic bracket/slider that holds the connector plug for your phone or tablet on the left device holder of your Remote Controller? Whenever I remove my iPhone from the clamps the (in this case) Lightning connector is pulled out of its holder, or takes the little bracket with it. Trying to slot it back into place is downright fiddly, if not virtually impossible.

I'm starting to wonder if all this aggro is worth it and to just leave the connector hanging free until it's needed by the iPhone. Anyone else shared similar frustrations and/or found a solution for it?

I just use a third party backed with a right angle connector. Plug in at the bottom and just plug in, once the phone is in place.

Discarded both bracket/slider and supplied cable on attaching iPad mini using the bottom connector. Micro USB connectors are too fragile for this kind of use.
