Hello, I'm new to forum and would like to know where the lawful areas to fly in Largo/Clearwater? I am also a new Student Pilot. Thanks

Albert C.

You're near PIE which is controlled airspace so you would need to use Airmap or Kittyhawk apps to get authorization to fly in that controlled airspace. Controlled airspace is typically within 5 miles of such an airport though bigger ones may have additional areas under control. The apps will show 1 mile square grids showing the altitude you can get authorization. You'll need a registration from FAA to submit authorization requests, which is only $5 for 3 years.

As for land you can take off, land or pilot from such as parks, you'll have to check local rules. For instance I was told Tampa (or perhaps all of Hillsborough) doesn't allow flying from parks. Not sure if the source was accurate. I've never had a hassle in Paso or Hernando.

Albert,
Register your drone with the faa at their "dronezone" pages. Like Dan said, you can then get authorizations to fly in restricted space legally. Its really no big deal....I live close to an airport and do it almost daily. Fly responsible!
