Gradients are for bringing the sky and ground exposures closer together...The sky is usually a few stops brighter than the ground so when properly exposing for the highlights (sky) the ground is usually underexposed...adding a gradient filter (with the gradient up) knocks down the sky exposure to what you need to insure proper exposure of the ground too...Regarding the graduated filters, what is the advantage of the graduated filters over the ND and polarized filters?

Have also used them upside down (gradient at bottom) to knock down the exposure of moving water and snow to match the sky...
The different strengths are for correcting more or less difference...bigger the # the more the filter cuts the light...
