Seriously? This is illegal?

I would be interested in what "Bad" information" you found on this forum. please be specific.
I was quoting someone else.

But, taking opinions as fact because someone says, or implies, that they KNOW the facts could end up as "bad information".

Indeed. But, I guess you knew what you were signing up for since you created this thread instead of asking the FAA directly.

I suppose...... BUT I will say anyone reading a post here and not doing a little more research for themselves is asking for trouble.
I, for instance, will tell someone what I believe to be true or what I know to work. Its up to the OP to take that advice and use it for a basis of further research.
IF they take my answer and just start tearing into things without further research.....Well that's Bad use of the forum, Not bad info from the forum. My 2 Cents.

A friend of mine who makes a living with his Drone wanted me to say: Drone pilots that hold part 107 certificates are more trained initially and the difference between the T.R.U.S.T. and the part 107 test should be more than obvious, Also in order for this person to keep doing their Drone job, they are required by their various employers to have continuing education in Drone flight and Drone law. They just don't go take the test and they are on their own forever. They must remain"current" to keep employment. Its pretty much all about who you want flying over your friends and family. Toms aerial Drone filming company OR the FPV kid down the street that happens to own a Mavic

And that.\' :) s all I have to say about that...............

Meanwhile ... back in the real world.
You don't have to have ever flown or even seen a drone to get a Part 107 and it only requires 70% on the test to pass.
After that the FAA has no requirement for professional development.
Just because a flyer has their Part 107 says nothing about their proficiency or experience.

And therein lies the issue.
A recreational pilot can do every single thing a Part 107 pilot can, without the Part 107 training, as long as it's not commercial.
SO, by default, this rule isn't about safety at all. Right?

That makes sense since patrolling the neighborhood is another example of not "flying for fun".
Not sure if I want to admit it, but as a Marine sniper, at the time still in the reserves, I would patrol the neighborhood camouflaged, but unarmed, in a ghillie suit "for fun."

My wife was horrified. "What if someone sees you?"
"That's the point."

Nobody ever saw me and I definitely had fun.

My takeaways from this thread:
  • Non-recreational encompasses much more than commercial.
  • The FAA gets to decide if what we do is recreational or not.

The FAA does not hire Drone pilots. My advice... find a company or production company like Sony pictures, or amblin or Dreamworks, or any other that does, and ask them. or ask the people over at local 600 .
Just because a flyer has their Part 107 says nothing about their proficiency or experience.
I think it says everything about them as a pilot. they are not on the internet debating they are getting things done. Do you have a part 107 cert? you must, to be commenting on it.
You don't have to have ever flown or even seen a drone to get a Part 107
That's right!! BUT you must posses the knowledge to safely operate the Drone to pass the exam.
Meanwhile ... back in the real world.
you are welcome to join us in the real world my guess is you are a little pale.
NOW I AM DONE............. Its been a hoot!
Sorry to the moderators probably my fault this debate has gone on as long as it has Im done tho I think...... It was fun and informative!!

The diversity of opinion is giving me a headache.

Uniformity is the spice of life.

I could have said it depends if you're drinking or not. I won't go there.

Diversity of opinion has no place in society. I think most dictatorships feel that way.
I didn't mean to imply that diversity is bad. It is comical to read all the logical answers back and forth.

Interesting thread. I work in the construction litigation industry. We all know the FAA will not enforce this… unless.. (and this is really why rules are written) something goes wrong. Let’s say someone got hurt during the operation or any flight for that matter. Some lawyer looking for an payout or judgement and their expert (like myself if it were construction) will dig deep and pull out every rule that applies. The pilot will then be deposed and fault will be assigned based on every violation that applies.
It’s not about the FAA enforcement most of the time. It’s about liability if things go bad. FWIW

I believe you hit the nail on the head.

So, I'm thinking of taking a small, entertainment only, video of the gutter on my house. You know, just for fun. I want to see if the mini is capable of looking down a downspout. Just for entertainment, mind you.
It would be entertaining to see the geometry of the gutter to see what physics might be involved with water pouring over the side. Doesn't that sound like fun?
Drone police are lurking around every corner looking for such a violation. Be careful!!! lol
