Wonder if the owner had Care Refresh?

Thats a MINI 3 PRO GPS board and scraps.
Now they are down a tanker and the winds are BAD today.
I have been asked about this by many of my non-Drone flying friends. All I can say is every village has its idiot.
If this Drone was purchased thru a store or DJI they can definitely catch the operator or at least the purchaser of the Drone now.

The LA times article said the pilot was unaware of the collision! IF that is so, the plane returned to its base and the damage was then observed? Unless the drone was impaled into the wing structure, how would they have located the culprit drone? Where would they have searched if the approximate position of the collision was not known. If the drone was impaled THAT picture should be available. There is a smashed drone in a bag with large intact pieces and multiple smaller pieces. Are their contact paint transfers?
Just some thoughts. I am NOT condoning flights into emergency areas NOR violations of A TFR. We need every means of delivering water and retardant on target safely. I have three sons who are firefighters (one a cheif) in southern CA. Any additional thoughts are appreciated.

Dumb question. Assuming the RC was connected to a network and that the FAA has placed restrictions in the area, would DJI update flight restrictions? Would the RC allow take-off?

The damage (and drone remains) were discovered on post flight turnaround at the airport. FBI is processing the drone parts for forensics and will pursue the offending operator. The Canadian SuperScooper plane is being repaired and expected to be back in the air sometime this week, and will be joined today or tomorrow with 2x more from Canada for a total of 4 of that model working the SoCal fires.

The photo of the evidence bag shows parts recovered from inside the wing of the plane.

You guys are way behind on the discussion. See the thread linked by tstr14 above.

Yes and no - depends on whether the operator allowed a recent DJI Safe for Flight update to the onboard database file. If so, the controller "should" have prevented flight into the TFR zone. However, if the operator had not updated after last Monday when the TFR was issued, then there was no forceable way to keep the DJI Mini out of the area.
Would also note that while DJI puts instructions to complete the FAA TRUST training, a lot of new deone operators have no clue as to the need to do so, or even feel like it applies to them. They think that since the Mini/sub-249g class of drones don't have to be registered, they can't be tracked and they can fly them wherever they want. It all leads to more bad PR for responsible drone pilots and likely more restrictions to hobby flying in the future. 😡

Saw this video on YouTube today. Not sure why they seem so baffled just because it was unregistered. They obviously have a serial number and it should be linked to whomever purchased the Drone.
As far as assuming the operator didn't know anything happened what the hell are they smoking? He'd obviously see the blackout on his screen and no it was hit. Then if he activated the find my drone option it would be even more obvious what happened.

Either way it really sucks that everything related to drones over the last couple months have been negative whether it be the New Jersey incidents or now this California disaster. It seems like just a matter of time before these idiots ruin it for the rest of us and when you're livelihood depends on it it sucks even more.

As of a few days ago its not necessary. The military has deployed Aerial Archer in the Los Angeles Area. Pilots in the Know won't even attempt to fly.
They don't need RID To find your Drone under that system your Controller switched on, is good enough to pinpoint you.

It wouldn't make any difference, it's the pilots responsibility to check for TFR's. Regardless, everyone knows you don't send up a drone in a wildfire situation or any emergency or disaster situation where aircraft response is possible, and in this case probable. It's just plain stupid or worse.

They actually have it repaired already, but now they have to wait for an inspection to certify it air worthy again before they can use it.

Your post reminds me of this story years ago of a bush pilot and ...
