Smart Controller lost connection to Mavic 2 Pro

That's what I'm suspecting as well. May just switch over to the original remote for the time being. The range has always been less than stellar since switching to the Smart Controller, had far better results with the original. But it sure is convenient.
You might try what Tribar said above. In the past when I used regular controllers, I found that sub par cables caused that problem. Get a good quality cable and try it.

My Mavic 2 Pro also is a "Calibrate my Compass" queen. None of the other drones ever ask. If I remember correctly, it is a "feature" of the firmware because DJI was having issues in the Inspire 2, I think..maybe. Maybe others with the M2s don't have this issue, I don't know. Mine certainly does, but then flies great. Just a nuisance.

I agree with the notion that this is not a calibration issue, compass or obstacle cameras. But it's easy to try. I would keep it close for awhile, that's for sure.

I really don't believe most M2s have this. Mine doesn't and I've never seen a rash of reports on these boards about it.

It will (and has) asked for calibration every time that I've moved HP more than a certain distance (50 miles I think it is) and that happens often on road trips, naturally.

I've had it ask for compass calibration when too near metal objects, which is rectified by moving my position with no calibration.

I've lost OcuSync connect before (still having stick control), but it was just once or maybe twice long ago and it never became a thing.

Who knows. I mostly fly M3s now. Enterprise and consumer. They never ask for calibration and I travel a hundred miles often. The Phantoms 3 and 4s that I used to use a lot never did either. But the M2 is an attention hog. Maybe it's just the one I have.

Yeah, the 'travel a certain number of miles' requirement has been dropped in newer models such as the M3. It's possible that they've even removed that requirement from M2 firmware, but I can't confirm it.

The M2 also requires recalibration of the aircraft hasn't been flown for more than 30 days (by design).

Also note to the OP: if you've added anything to the aircraft with metal in it, that could be a culprit.

There are other threads with lots of replies that you might want to browse through, like this one.

halfway through the second flight, my Mavic suddenly lost connection to the Smart Controller.
....
The live feed on the controller went static and gray, and the drone just hovered at 311 feet where the connection dropped. I expected the Return to Home (RTH) function to initiate, but it didn’t. Fortunately, despite the disconnection message, I was still able to manually control the drone and bring it back safely.
That RTH did not occur and you had full control of teh drone is a clear indication that you never loct connection.
What happened was you lost part of the connection - you lost the downlink, but still had the uplink.
This would be shown in the recorded flight data if you posted it.

It's common and completely normal, with no need to recalibrate anything, particularly the compass.
When people suggest recalibrating the IMU and compass, it's a pretty good indication that they have no idea what the IMU and compass actually do and are just making uninformed guesses.

Here's the flight data. As I mentioned before, it stopped recording to the log when I experienced the connection issue. I've lost video data before, but never experienced this.
