Smart controller WiFi connection

This is my 4th DJI drone. I have a Phantom 3, Mavic Pro, and Mavic Air, that I controlled with the use of my cell phone. I just purchased a M2Z with the smart controller. I have only flown close to my home using my WiFi connection. Since the controller doesn't have a SIM card I'm assuming that I will have to use my mobile hot spot to be able fly when I am away from home. I have noticed that my hot spot isn't very reliable. What is going to happen if I lose my hot spot or WiFi connection while flying? Do I have to have a internet connection to fly. I would appreciate any input on this subject please.

You do not require internet connection
For fly drone
You need internet for download maps
And for updates
If you go somewhere with out internet
Make sure you download maps of that areas
To use them offline
