Spain Drone Fine

In the email you received, hover over the "from" email address and see what it says.....more than likely, not from the Spanish government.....otherwise, ignore it and never travel to Spain again.

Thx Mark...my memory span is becoming more inverse to my age.

😁

OP says he got it "in the mail"...not by email....I still think he made this up

EDIT: see post #31. It is still interesting that some people believed that the 250,000 euro fine was real.

Exactly. There have been no further posts from @Kellyjb . And I've just noticed that this was their first and only post here.

I assume he/she is amused at how seriously some folks have taken the fable.

Yeah, I'd agree.
One and done. Joined, one post, never heard from again.

This is somewhat related. A few years ago, I rented a car at Heathrow, drove around London for a couple weeks, came home to the states and received a fine in the mail with pictures of the rental car and location where they said I made the infraction. The supplied photos were dated before I even arrived in England.

The rental car company immediately sucked $200 x 2 fines from the credit card I used to rent the car. After calling the rental car company a few times, they eventually told me that the person who rented the car before me got two infractions and didn’t pay them, so they were going to pass the bill off to me. So, I had to fight it with my credit card company.

Tarragona is under controlled airspace, so you probably appeared on the local Aeroscope as there's an airport nearby. The ways of being busted are basically this:
  1. You were naive enough to put your operator ID on the Fly App, so the drone was emitting your data through RID/Aeroscope.
  2. You used a real email on the DJI app, like for example “yourrealnameandsurname@google.com”. Your DJI email is shared through Aeroscope, so that's how they got it.
I was not aware that it is even possible to put operator ID in the Fly app. Did I miss something? But as result of this thread I did change my DJI login email to a throwaway Gmail address.

I have no experience with this but one would think that for that amount of money the OP would be getting a visit from a U.S. Government official..We have treaties with Spain.

and FELIX Its also a really good book!

One of the funniest 'cultural context' gags I've watched was the Latin lesson in Life of Brian.

A book obviously edited by a man with a really bad vowel problem... I'm sure there are pills for that.

Thanks for the recommendation - I'll see if Amazon can wing a copy in my direction. Muchas gracias.

Hello all, thanks for your timely replies. As it turns out, it was only 250 Euros and not 250,000. I was so nervous I misread the fine. I have up to 15 days to voluntarily pay the fine with a discount incentive. Either way, thanks for your feedback.

Be careful out there, there's no place like home. Imagine if you had done something wrong or more egregious. Many people in this world doesn't believe in fair and proportional punishment and could care less about excessive. Don't be surprised the next time you go back you're on a list or have some type of flag on your entry status.

  1. There are several warning zones in the Tarragona area, including Reus Airport, a penitentiary, and an Emergencies Control Center.
  2. The maximum fines in Spain for very serious infractions range from €250,000 to €4,500,000.
  3. There's a 50/50 probability that this is a scam, as opposed to an official fine.
  4. Exclude one of the probabilities by contacting the authority that has supposedly issued the fine. Be sure to use an alternate contact channel. Do not reply to the email.
  5. If it turns out you have indeed been fined, contact a good Spanish attorney. Be careful when choosing him/her. Try to obtain references through a Spanish UAV forum.
  6. If Spanish law is anything like Portuguese law, the authorities may not be able to enforce the fine solely based on Remote ID, even if they have recorded the event. If you have not been personally identified on location, the fine could be challenged.

All the best,

MK

I still think this is a hoax.....how did the guy see the comma and three zeroes that were not there?
In Europe the comma is used as a decimal point (a period is used in the US). I don’t think they use thousandths of a Euro though.

Just out of curiosity have any of you been caught up in the smishing scams for road tolls in MA and/or NY? I’ve gotten several and suspect a data breach from my EZ-Pass account. The big clue is that they originate from a Phillipines phone number +63 country code.

I am on LI.....I have gotten 1 or 2 bogus notices over the years drom "EZ Pass"...as far as my saying I think it is a hoax with this guy's claim....I am saying that I think his claim that this happened to him is a made up story......I think the guy made it up

I've gotten a few Ezpass here in PA, emails or texts, delete

Hello everyone,

I visited Spain last summer and few my DJI Mavic Mini for a mere three minutes close to the Port City of Tarragona. Today I received a fine in the mail of 250,000 Euros and I don't know where to turn. I honestly cant pay that huge fine but I also understand that I was totally ignorant of the strict drone rules in Spain. Does anyone have any experience with receiving a fine from the Spanish authorities and how did you handle it? Also, will I be banned from visiting Spain and the EU in the future if I am unable to pay this very very hefty fine? I look forward to any feedback.
Mortgage the house, sell the kids (legally of course), and pay the Quarter Million Euro fine. ;)
Spain needs the money.
