First snow in the Swiss Alps in the beautiful Engstlenalp area. 4K aerial drone video. The route from Melchsee-Frutt to Engstlenalp, continuing over the Joch Pass to the Trüebsee is a hiking classic. Engstlenalp belongs to the Bernese municipality of Innertkirchen in the Oberhasli district. During the summer months, a postbus route operating from Meiringen and Innertkirchen runs to Engstlenalp through the little-known Gental (Gen Valley), which forks off from the Susten Pass road in the lower Gadmental. Private vehicles are subject to a toll fee. The area surrounding Engstlenalp borders on the Cantons Obwalden and Nidwalden. The Engstlensee (1850 metres altitude) is a lake bordered by stone pines with a basic and traditional mountain hotel in the immediate vicinity with 30 rooms and a total of 60 beds. It is the ideal place to break a long-distance hike; the Engstlensee is on several hiking trails such as the Nidwaldner Höhenweg (high trail), ViaSbrinz and Via Alpina. The route over the Joch Pass into the valley basin at Engelberg can also be traversed with one of the two chairlifts that operate in both summer and winter. There are plentiful opportunities for hikers and mountain bikers in the area, such as the off-the-beaten-track hiking classic «Vier-Seen-Höhenwanderung» (four lake high-level trail). Angling and rowing (boats for hire) on the lake. The hotel is open subject to weather conditions in winter, and Engstlenalp is a starting point for ski tours and snowshoe treks to the Joch Pass, Schafberg and Graustock. Engstlenalp is still an important mountain farming region. The valley’s farmers send over 400 head of cattle a year to graze on its summer pastures.
