One has nothing to do with the other. You need to register your drone with the FAA if you're flying commercially, but not as a hobbyist. You need to call the airport tower if you're going to be flying within 5 miles of the airport.

If you use an app like Airmap, they state before you file for notification your drone must be registered with the FAA.

Obviously that is an error on airmaps part because as of May 19th 2017 Hobbyist NO LONGER have to register ANY drone with the FAA.
