The word 'drone'.

So, we accept the improper use of a word because people are uneducated?

No.. because the word becomes so associated with something that it becomes the name we all refer to it as. This has been taking place for 2000 years.

Ever used the word forte? If you are not pronouncing it "fort" you are "uneducated" (to use your own words). However, please do as you state here and start only saying "fort" and correcting everyone when they pronounce it incorrectly.

Sounds like language pronounciation is your fort.

;-)

I'm prepared to get shot to pieces as I realise this is irrational. Is it just me that gets a bit riled up every time someone uses the word 'drone' on a forum , or in general parlance? After all, that is what these things are, but there's too much negative baggage. I prefer quadcopter.
Couldn't agree more. I prefer to use sUAS, especially since I got my Part 107 Remote Pilot certificate. That's what the FAA calls it. Sure, the public is going to call it what they want to if they see you out flying, but you can't change that.

So, we accept the improper use of a word because people are uneducated? Stop using "drone" and eventually people will learn. If you accept the incorrect use of a word than you are simply resigning to the wishes of the uneducated and misinformed.

If you say, "I bought a quadcopter." and asked what is that? Your reply should be, "It is a remotely piloted aircraft [with or without camera]". If they still look confused, show them a photo. If they say, "Oh! A drone." ignore them.

The FAA doesn't uses UAS or RPA. They don't use drone. Words have specific meanings, learn them.

Well the FAA is in the country that write colour, aluminium and analyse wrong so why would they be a standard?

In the end isn't language just a tool for communication? If the word drone communicates what we want to say, why would that be wrong then? Communication was achieved!!

Here in Italy they're called SAPR (Sistemi Aerei a Pilotaggio Remoto - Remotely Piloted Aerial Systems) only by the aviation authority, ENAC, in the rules; in specialised forum and sites they call them both quads (or exa or octa) or just drones; the rest calls them drone (singular) and droni (plural) spelling both the italian way, which includes spelling the final vowel. FTR, two albanian guys I met while filming 2 days ago called it 'drone' the english way, without spelling the 'e'

When I first started flying I too was concerned about what it was called due to the negative connotation of "drone". But in the few short years since I don't care what its called, the cat is out of the bag. Doesn't matter if "we" call it a Quad, Hex, or UAS. The public, media, and the masses know them as a drones...

When people ask me if that's a drone, I say no just a quadcopter. My Predator is in the shop right now.
