Thinking about a Mavic - I have a couple of questions

I used to fly home built multirotors but most of my flying recently has been fixed wing. However, I like the look of the Mavic. Have a couple of questions if you guys could help out.

Firstly, I know the DJI RE goggles have the power downrated for EU countries under the CE type approval - is there a similar range restriction for the Mavic? I'm in the UK.

Secondly, I'm keen on using the Mavic to film my mates in flight - can the 'Follow me' mode be used to lock onto an RC plane and follow it while the Mavic is being flow around the plane?

Thanks

Howdy from Wyoming @Flynn203 , welcome to the community, plenty of fine folk and excellent information here. The Mavic is powered down for EU, the Mavic may have trouble locking on to such a small target such as an RC plane.

Hello,
It is a pleasure to welcome you to the Mavic Pilots forum.
I hope that you will be able to use the forum to further your safety knowledge and for the exchange of innovative ideas and as a resource for current developments in Mavic quadcopters.
Enjoy! Thumbswayup

Thanks for the welcome folks. I thought that it would be restricted, but since my fixed wing models can take me as far as I want, that's not a deal breaker by any means. Much more of pain with the RE goggles as I wanted to use those for fixed wing flying as well.

No lock-on for something as small as an RC plane - so it's down to piloting skills to keep up, fly around the plane and keep control of the quad. I'm out of practice to say the least, but there will be some muscle memory still there I hope. Bear with me as I ask some pretty basic questions - I haven't moved up the ranks using earlier DJI quads, and no one at my flying site has one. The camera gimbal moves independently of the quad - how easy is it to keep the camera tracking a moving object while flying the quad? I'm used to Fatshark goggles, so a set of DJI goggles is probably on the cards as well. I know they have head tracking - is that the easiest way to accomplish this? My old quads had a fixed camera, so it was a matter of controlling the quad only.

Using a drone to fly circles around a plane would be difficult to say the least, the camera gimbal only moves up and down so you would be controlling the shot with the drone; having to keep it centered on the plane while maintaining a circular flying action.

This kind of thing would be very challenging even for an Inspire and separate pilot and cameraman.

Not so easy then. I have a 360' pan servo on the top of my 55" flying wing which turns a flight cam and HD cam and I can use that to track and film another fairly slow plane flying close by using a slider on the transmitter to spin the servo and see the image thro goggles. But I have to spin to the front frequently to see where I am flying! I thought the Mavic would be a more stable version of that. I wonder if the head tracking function might be the way to go.

I dont know if the Mavic would have the speed to fly circles around a flying fixed wing RC plane.

largely depends on size and speed (and colour to some extent) of the fixed wing you are following.
it has been tried at my club field, but this was late last year with fading light early from mid afternoon.
we do plan to experiment again.
what we did learn was to turn off backward flying.
profile seemed to get the best results so far.
