Just been reading on UAVAcademy that from June 2020 if we want to continue to fly out Mavic Mini in the UK we have to complete an A2CofC. Is this true? Seems pointless having a sub 250g aircraft if the CAA just change the regulations every year.

If so, has anyone researched an affordable way to do this or do we just go all out and get an unrestricted qualification and get bigger heavier aircraft?

I think you've misunderstood the guidance.

You will need to register you Mini and take the DMARES test with the CAA. All drones with cameras will need to do this regardless of weight. This costs £9.

With regard to A2CofC - this is optional. The A2 CofcC removes restrictions on proximity to buildings, and lowers the distances you can fly in relation to uninvolved people. The lowest course I can find is £250.

Thanks mate. I have already done the registration but no harm in doing the DMARES too.

The A2CofC is a blessing for some of us and I wish it was here now .. it means that I`ll be able to use the Mini professionally (Roof & Building damage, gutter & chimney inspections etc) . when I had the Phantom-3-Pro 2015/16 , it was £1500 course in london Plus travel and hotel bills and test (I live in the north) followed by having to write a manual and a flight test, if you failed , more expense .. due to this I gave up on the idea of using it for work but A2CofC makes it Viable for a fraction of the price and the test centre is 20 miles away and the P3P was a pain to use anyway and had very short flight time after all the messing about before take-off (its achilles heel IMO) but it was excellent in winds, lightbridge was superb and the controller was quality ..

I bought the mini because of its size , battery life and that the camera quality is a lot better than the Air . I`d still have got it regardless of the under 250G business .. I took the 20 questions Test too after getting the mini , it`s a good way to make sure you know the law and regs if nothing else ..

The camera quality is nowhere near as good as the Air.... the Mini doesn't have the same bitrate, 4K, or full manual controls...

You need a CE approved drone to make the most of the A2CofC, at the moment there are none although I suspect the recently leaked Mavic photos will be a new sub 900g Mavic (not the Mavic Air 2).

That only applies after July 2022. The current DJi drones can still be used under an A2CofC until then.
