US government abandons plan to blacklist Chinese-made drones

See:

Apparently our extreme leader (oops dictated esteemed) has backtracked due to realities of international commerce. Hope to be able to purchase Mini5 as soon as possible.

Does this change anything regarding DJI warranties or care refresh being able to be used or tariffs or anything beyond what we already knew about being able to buy in USA at inflated prices or buy from S Korea or other countries with maybe no tariffs or fees?Doesn't sound like it.I realize no new model approvals is still in force.

No, this changes nothing.

Incorrect. This is simply one single part of a very complex set of federal agency attempts to ban DJI and others. The DOC simply withdrew this one part of the puzzle.

We don't know exactly why yet, but we have D.C. folks trying to find out. It may be because the FCC announcement on 12/22 had the same desired outcome, or they pulled it due to it being part of the trade talks between Trump and Xi scheduled for April.

Do not believe this headline, it's wrong. This is the kind of garbage we get when someone with just enough knowledge to be dangerous starts posting stuff.

I expect that if things go well at the summit in April, and they will because that's what Trump and the Republicans need, all this DJI crap will end.

Has the FAA ever weighed in about Chinese or foreign drones?

Or will they register any drone which the FCC approves?

The FAA has nothing to do with this. They are a separate agency. They do not cross reference drones to see if they have an FCC license.

FAA regulates civilian airspace, including drones.

I understand the radios require FCC certification but why wouldn't the FAA have a say?

This is Kinda good news for us FPVers but it really does nothing for a DJI owner,

It is true the "covered list" is an FCC specific tool and they put DJI on that list.
I'm not sure how the FAA can just ignore that fact that a company is on the covered list but I suppose they don't necessarily have to check with FCC first. I would have thought if you end up on that DJI, that means everything DJI not just drones or equipment. How exactly does the FAA do new business with a company on the covered list? I don't know. Either way, even if the FAA would allow you to register a Mini 6 Pro later this year, you still don't have permission from the FCC to operate that equipment inside the US, never mind the airspace. It is kinda strange the FAA hasn't spoken up lately....

It doesn't matter.

FAA registration is about airspace safety and accountability, not communications compliance.

It's not their circus, those are not their monkeys.

Here we go again. About to get blindsided because we don't think these government agencies are not smart enough to abuse their responsibilities. "It's not their job to...."

Mark my words, the FAA is going to slam us harder than any FCC or DOC ever tried. But you won't see this coming because you believe their lane is all about "safety and accountability."

LOOOOOOOOOOOL

Got it. Doom coming. You know. No one else does, because they're naive.

You missed the point. It doesn't matter what the FAA does as long as the FCC does not certify new DJI drones.

But I updated my avatar, so I'll be protected.

A message today from another government agency, DHS, which basically means we can expect a lot of "initiatives" from DHS over the next 6 months:

"Drones represent the new frontier of American air superiority. Under President Trump, we are entering a new era to defend our air superiority to protect our borders and the interior of the United States. With the creation of the DHS Program Executive Office for Unmanned Aircraft Systems and Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems, President Trump continues his historic legacy in developing American dominance. This will help us continue to secure the border and cripple the cartels, protect our infrastructure, and keep Americans safe as they attend festivities and events during a historic year of America’s 250th birthday and FIFA 2026."
