The geo restrictions come from the geographic location of the drone, which comes from the drone's GPS receiver.
A VPN would have no effect on that.

Even if it did bypass the geo-lock, VPN can significantly slow data transfer - even on fast high speed internet connections.

I've never had issues with geo-lock like some seem to have; so when and if I get it (very rare as I look at my apps of where flying to note any restrictions / no fly zones) - it has been easy peasy to unlock and fly.
