it was my failure to understand how return to home functions.

It was dark, so I Was flying indoors in "tripod mode."

I had spent about 40 minutes total flying in this space in multiple flights.

I pushed return to home button, assuming it would return to where it took off.

Instead, it began to rapidly ascend and fly towards dangerous obstacles. I pulled down on the stick and reached up to snatch the mavic out of the air....which caused the avoidance system to fly away from me rapidly and into an obstacle.

Sucks man... did it break? Sounds corny, but you should definitely read the manual.

Yikes, that is a lot of blood on the ground.
I hope its not as bad as the video suggests.

That sucks, but I have a friend that definitely 1 ups yours, he actually tried to do a litchi mission indoors, lol, it didn't end well.

I thought that every time the mavic stopped its propellers and took off again the home point was reset.....apparently I failed to understand that while this is true outside, it is not true when there is no gps.

User manual says "Aircraft automatically descends and lands if RTH is triggered when the aircraft is within a 16ft radius of the Home Point."

Had the same thing happen to me while flying inside. Maybe the home point was not recorded precisely due to poor gps signal.

idiots pressing RTH indoors like they can't see where the drone is and manually fly it back to them...

Hate to say it. Why do people spend 1000.00 and fly inside a building when you can spend 100.00 and tear the crap out of something and laugh about it. I guess it has to do with gray matter. ( sorry, I just see this scenario too much)

I am not going to beat you up for flying indoors and hitting the RTH. I think crashing the drone was beat up enough. If stuck indoors pull the props off for safety and fire the drone up and go into simulator mode and mess around to get your fix. It's like a nicotine patch or gum when you can't smoke, not as satisfying but will help you a little.

Interesting to note that the cost of a Mavic is greater than the median monthly household income in China, which is where DJI is headquartered. They must be amazed at all the crazy crashes that Americans are having with their drones.

Hey guys, I'm here to learn and before any flight I always remind myself that there is a pause button. It's the first I've seen in a controller and when flying in tight spots, I always have my fingers ready to press it.

If only they would mention in the manual how exactly RTH works ... oh, wait - they did. RTFM.

Fireman.....at work? Looks like the engine bay..interesting choice for a place to fly.....sorry about your drone...but may I suggest you watch a few YouTube videos for new owner/operators? (Dylan Young, Ed Ricker, TVSpecialists, TomsTechTime, etc) And please..spend some time reading the manual...I know it sounds corny and something firemen don't like to do (I'm married to an Engineer that just retired) but there is some really good info in the MavicPro guide....also...There's some really great information out there..you might want to spend some of your "Golden Hour" viewing some videos....Have fun and fly safe...

I'm sorry for your loss. It is refreshing to see new operators acknowledge their mistake and understand what they did wrong, rather than blaming DJI, or cluelessly ask us.

But like others have pointed out, reading the manual first would have helped. ;)
