In July I was in my 15ft Boston Whaler near downtown Chicago and wanted to get up in the air quickly to get pictures and videos with my eight month old Mav 3 Classic. I took off from the bow and hit a life preserver thus tumbling into the water. I dove overboard within one second and saved it from going to the bottom. After that, I took a huge wave over the bow and the controller got soaked! At least my mission was complete.

I sent it to DJI for repairs before Thanksgiving and received a message a few days ago with the damages. $1,068. Yeah, I know. So I called and spoke with a guy. I said, "hey I can buy a new one for $1,300, how much will you give me for a trade in?" He said give me a few minutes... Came back and told me he was able to get a 40% off discount for me. I said done but, will I get a repaired drone or a new one? He said I would get a new one.

I wanted to share with everyone in case you are ever in this situation. I did buy a Mav 3 Pro a few weeks prior to sending it off for repair. I knew that I wanted to keep my Classic because the batteries, controllers, and charging systems are interchangeable. All this stuff adds up fast

Now, I am not sure I want to keep my new Mav 3 Pro. I'll cover in another thread.

DJI is going to send you a brand new (refurb) for $1,068....Why buy one for 300 bucks more?
DJI does NOT repair Drones.

How do you figure that?...If he is getting a discount of 40% off of $1,300....he is only going to pay $780...still a good amount of $$$$...but it is a good savings, also
My initial bill to repair my Lake Michigan water-logged Mav 3 Classic and DJI remote controller was $1,068. The guy at DJI took 40% off that repair price which lowered it to $645. He told me I would receive a brand new drone. If he had told me it would be repaired and sent back to me for the $1,068, I would have considered just buying a new one at $1,399. Keep in mind that I sent it in without the battery. LOL. Assuming its new, I get a new battery. What do they go for? $150. Sorry for the confusion. Now my fear is that I may end up in court on binding agreement charges. Just kidding. I read that whole thread and was shocked and confused.

Lake Michigan is notorious for wind and waves. But flying a drone when the wind is so strong it blows the drone sideways into the life preserver, waves so high they splash over the sides of the boat, having to dive over the side of the boat to keep the drone from sinking, etc… You were sailing under one Luck Star.

You also need to post this in "Ripley's Believe it or Not and I Survived…"
