Howdy all, first post… done a bit of reading and know there are posts on water… but this is more for people’s opinion on accessories.

Have a Mavic Air 2 with iPad mount, lanyard to hold controller, range extenders.

I primarily film sailing events - out on the water filming starts, rounding buoys and finishing,… I have encountered a wide range of issues, been hit behind by a mast, come close to drowning a number of times…. Have been looking at the floating devices for emergency landing if needed..

The two I am keen for feedback on are STARTRC Water Landing Gear and the Phantom Rescue Jacket… one is pool noodles and the other is essential those plastic camping mats cut up….

Have read more from people on the Phantom but not much on STARTRC one. To be honest, for light waves etc I would think the STARTRC would be better…. Has anyone been using this and are happy?

Also, the wetsuit from Phantom seems good also, but from pics not sure if that would work with the STARTRC water landing gear…

Any feedback on ppls experiences would be massively helpful! Thanks!!!!

Rather than looking for a solution to protect your drone, I’d suggest concentrating on how to not drown.

Just a thought.
You know to be honest that is a great bit of advice…. I have not drowned it yet… but was thinking of some backup insurance plan if something was to go wrong.

Do you make special arrangements for unintended landings while flying over land? Do you add an accessory when flying over densely wooded areas where the drone could be lodged 100' off the ground in a tree?

If the concern is making a controlled (pilot or software) landing on water, then a flotation device might prevent the drone from being damaged by water. Any sort of uncontrolled landing, such as collision or hardware failure, will probably result in the drone being soaked and flotation would only be good for recovering the corpse for a Care Refresh claim.

There's also the loss in performance to consider for the weight and drag of a flotation system.

When you record these things WHY are you on the boat? Filming from the boat would suggest "distracted flying" meaning you are just asking for an accident.

I have the Phantom Rain suit / float for my MA2.

I used it a few times around the water and in the winter time as it's good for landing on snow, a different form of water.

I used it for recovery purposes if it happened but never did.

Here's a neat little item that may work for recovery of something that fell in the water.

Better than nothing.

I am not on a boat - am on the shore flying out to film the racing.

That's certainly the simpler way to go. I think that was @Cafguy who asked why you were shooting from a boat.

My point was that drones are no more likely to end up in the water than they are to end up on the ground. We don't make special accommodations to deal with drones landing in trees, so are special accommodations needed over water? There are several people on the forum who do a lot of over-water flying to shoot photos and video. As far as I know, none use flotation devices.

So I think you have it reversed the StartRC landing gear is the Pool Noodle and its design is for Pools

The Phantomrain Rescue Jacket is designed to land on the Waves in the Ocean and Lake.

The Phantomrain Rescue Jacket uses a very low center of Gravity so the Drone can Negotiate the Waves on the water.

Add to the fact that the Rescue Jacket increases your VLOS and makes hand catching on a boat easier.
