What are the do's & don'ts of battery maintenance.....???

Like the title says, what are the do's and don'ts for battery maintenance? Being that the MA batteries have become as common as hen's teeth and cost a king's ransom to replace even if you can find them, it seems prudent to be vigilant with maintenance.Please help educate me.....
