It is possible to disable the autoland on reaching critical low battery behaviour through the Assistant 2 debug method and fly the drone till the battery is completely dead. I would rather destroy a battery and save the drone than lose the drone to protect the battery if it came down to that particular choice.
What happens when during RTH the battery runs out?
