hi to all fellow flyers on the forum
i have joined the new Neo forum ,and have been sharing my findings as i fly the Neo
i decided to post this thread on this forum ,because i expect there will be many mavic owners contemplating whether or not to purchase the Neo now or in the future ,the following are my thoughts on the Neo after trying out the different features ,apart from flying it as a FPV style drone ,something i have no experience of as i am unable to fly with goggles
for me Neo, is what i would call a taster drone, both in its functions, and the use of various types of control methods
first way to fly it is just the drone with no connected device using the buttons on the drone to select a mode ,such as dronie ,rocket, circle ,and follow, and others .
these come with preset parameters for height and distance during the chosen mode
the follow mode is very good, as it sticks to you like glue as you move around
then comes the next step, and that is connecting the drone itself to the phone this allows it to be flown with virtual joystcks and the ability to change how the drones height and distance from the take off point is set at ,and some other basic adjustments for the camera,
it also has a voice control mode ,be aware that using just the phone only, gives limited height and distances, that can be flown with the virtual joysticks, and they are not the smoothest way of controlling the drone
for those who opted for the flymore combo with the N3 RC or if you already have the RCN 2 or RC2 controller that comes with the Air3 and Mini 4 pro ,then you can fly the Neo using the fly app
this gives the Neo almost all of the the larger drones abilities, during flight ,but what it doesn't do, is enable it to fly with the same abilities as larger drones, with regards to wind and being able to see it at distance ,but keeping it fairly close to home, and not to high, then as a first drone, it would be a good way to get the hang of flying with joysticks and a controller
finally for those who already fly FPV and have the goggles 3 and associated equipment ,then Neo can be flown with them, but for someone wishing to try it out, the Neo could be way of starting off ,but it will require purchasing extra equipment at a considerable cost ,just to find out if its really for you
sorry if this post has turned into hard read, and i also know that there will be many on the forum, who will think i am stating the obvious, but i did ask if i could post this thread on this forum ,simply to inform others

Take care OMM

I see Neo more like a test drone, a hint from DJI to what is to come in future drones, given that Neo comes with new AI features, such as voice control and human body detection. Once more DJI stands out when it comes to introducing new technologies.

How do you know what is being recorded when no phone is connected?
How do you start and stop recording when no phone is connected?
Assuming you have no way of seeing what is being recorded, when no phone is connected.
Does it have an external microSD card or is it just an internal memory, and if so, how much memory?
It's great price and ideal for some applications. I have been contemplating getting one.

How does it know when to stop recording, if no phone is attached and how does it know where to land if you move from where you are and how does it know you want it to land, with no controller?

We invite all potential NEO pilots (even those who want to know more about it) to Drop by the NEO pilot’s check-in to introduce yourself.

@Cymruflyer ,wow so many questions
it records what the camera is pointed at
recording starts as soon as the Neo takes off
and finishes when it lands
this is applicable in nearly all of the auto functions
it has a 22gb internal card
when a particular manouver is completed ,it comes back to the start point, hovers close by, and then you just put your outstretched palm up hand underneath the Neo and it lands
to obtain the footage you simply plug a Type C connector cable into the port at the back of the drone that has
a standard USB on the other end into your computer
and then you can access the recorded data from the drone to your chosen file ,after downloading the Data then you can delete the whole file and the 22gb will be available to record on again

I have also joined the NeoPilots forum and would encourage anyone who is interested in one to join as there is a lot of excellent information over there about the NEO.

For me I am interested in the NEO for a number of reasons: the ability to do low level tracking shots, the wide FOV equivalent to a 14mm lens, the ease of setup, and the ability to use it in locations with lots of obstacles where using my other drones would be impractical. For example, I have always wanted to fly over small streams that have foliage all around. The completely enclosed props and the fact that it is a low cost drone make this more practical for me.

Just a word of warning. The Neo is a gateway drug to FPV. I’d only had mine a day and ended up buying an Avata2. It’s such a good little drone.

That's correct, but I was surprised (and delighted!) that it's even a bit smarter and capable than that: In Follow Mode, when you face it and stick your arm out palm up, it will fly towards and over your palm, stop, then descend and land.

Pretty cool. It's doing all of this through processing the main camera image and the tiny pinhole camera on the bottom.

Have you tried any low light flights or evaluated the performance of the Neo's VPS system, if so what do you think ?
There seem to be quite a few complaints about the VPS system on the DJI forum but I am not sure if they are by seasoned pilots who have/had unrealistic expectations of a newly released drone or newbies playing with the newest toy on the market who are finding it not to their liking. I suspect that your assessment would be quite reliable.

Just curious, with regards to flight data, is this in the form of .txt and .DAT flight logs, if so are the txt flight logs processable by phantomhelps log viewer and are the DATs processable by CsvView ?

Thanks

Great summary!
The first mode you described: does it have a display built in to view the settings? If so, then wow! May be a game changer.
Using a controller: what kind of range have you experienced? Their specs say 50m, which seems limiting...

@Yorkshire_Pud and ,@Zarro ,in reply to @Yorkshire_Pud first sadly the VPS system is rather limited especially by reduced lighting conditions under the drone during flight, and also what the actual surface below the drone is as well ,
i am afraid a lot of seasoned flyers of DJI other drones, are going to be disapointed with its limitations
it will not be to everyones taste, and even if being flown with a controller ,then its flight envelope is nowhere near as good as its bigger siblings ,cant speak for flight data as i dont bother with it myself sorry
@Zarro when it is connected to the app on the phone then it is possible to to view some of the settings and alter them
the 50m you mentioned is the range when just the phone is used
if a controller is used then the range is how brave you are to test it out ? ie being able to see it ,and the limitations of the amount of flight time the small battery gives you

Thanks, that's a pity.

The Neo in a lot of ways, reminds me of my Tello when using the phone as a controller. The problems with VPS seem similar to the Tello.
