What's the point of buying a Mavic 2 Zoom actually?

While I can see the advantage of having a larger sensor on the Mavic 2 Pro versus the half inch sensor on the new Air, I'm wondering what is the point of buying a Mavic 2 Zoom actually? The Mavic Air 2 is just superior in every way and 450 dollars cheaper no? Do you know if DJI plan to adjust the price of the Zoom?

Thanks for your post. Yeah the zoom is not used in other drones and that could explain why people would still buy the Mavic 2 Zoom but that's a lot more money just for that feature. That's why I was wondering if they planned to sell the Mavic 2 Zoom at a cheaper price.

I have a Autel Evo and I use the zoom sometimes. It's a nice feature. I doubt DJI will sell either drone cheaper until the next Mavic Pro 3 comes out..

Unless there's a variant I'm not aware of, the Autel Evo does not have a mechanical zoom instead like most other drones it uses a digital zoom.

I have a Mavic 2 Pro and I would like a second drone at some point and was waiting for compatibility with the Smart Controller.

I looked at the P4P v2 but then DJI took out the ability of the SC to control it although it seems they have since put it back in the latest firmware upgrade.

I was more interested in the Zoom not only for the form factor but also for the compatibility with my existing batteries etc. but waited until the Mavic Air 2 came out to see what that offered.

I would however still prefer the Zoom and if applied to price might even work out cheaper than the Air 2 in my situation because if I bought the Air 2 I would need the fly more kit for a start having got used to the extra batteries, charging hub etc.

If I went for the Zoom I would only really need drone only as it shares the system accessories with the 2 Pro.

Such a pity that you can’t get a decent price on drone only as they only seem to drop @£100 from the kit price and yet if you were to buy the controller, charger and one battery as separate items it would set you back @£400

Now if I could get the Mavic 2 Zoom drone only at @£400 off the kit price I would jump in a heartbeat...

I think we'll see sales of the Mavic 2 series drop away as they're the more specialist models in the range and before the Mavic Air 2 people were forced onto them if they wanted some of the better features like Occusync. The Mavic Air 2 is going to sit in the middle and be the best all rounder so I expect it will be a very strong seller but there's still room for the Mavic 2 series for people who want the larger sensor of the pro or the zoom lens. Plus the Mavic 2 series has been out a couple of years now so it's not like they're killing off sales before it's started.

Which will lead many nicely into the Mavic 3 Series when it is released...later this year maybe with features that will leapfrog the Air 2 of course!

I was (am still?) tempted by the Air 2 but am going to wait and see what the Mavic 3 Series brings and then balance features/performance vs cost.

I have a M2z, MA and EVO1 - The M2z is my goto for commercial and high end work. I got rid of my spark as I felt it was just a nice toy but not practical and I have to say the same about the MM and MA2. Why buy the M2z? because it rocks

I have a Phantom 3 Advance, Mavic Pro, Mavic Pro 2 Zoom and a Mavic Air. They all have their place and use. The MP2Z is unique in that it has the zoom which is not available on the other drones. I considered the MP2 with its terrific camera and lens but find the zoom really handy. You tend to grow into whatever you get. I agree with the statement "Why buy the M2z? because it rocks."

I have 3 drones and my M2Z is my go to drone. I’m not a professional photographer, I shoot and capture things of interest to me, I do not do photo upgrades in post. I am just a hobbyist who enjoys flying drones.
However, what I do is I livestream and having the added feature of Zoom just makes live-streaming that more enjoyable to my viewers. Example, chasing kite surfers or spotting wildlife or discussing a point of interest that I can zoom in on makes the broadcast fun and interesting.
Drones, like anything else are subject to what meets your needs. Do you want portability, longer flight time or a better camera? This is all up to the hobbyist.
Some of my fellow drone flyers that own M2P are like me and not professional photographers but they are a little envious of the zoom feature and it’s capabilities.

I have a Mavic Pro Zoom 2, my only wish is that it had a much better Zoom on it! I might to upgrade to a Inspire 2 with the real good Zoom Lens! I find that those zoom lens come in handy for Wedding Shots!

I think it's perfectly reasonable to compare the features of the drones as many people aren't intimately familiar with the models and want to understand where they fit in and which one is most suitable. The negativity towards the Mavic Air 2 because it's too big an improvement over the original Air is a bit odd though. I dislike the snobbery towards the Mavic Mini but it's nothing new and I remember exactly the same from Inspire/Phantom owners when the Mavic Pro was released.

Except it might not actually be a 48MP camera as specs state it has 48MP EFFECTIVE pixels?

It could have a 12MP Quad Bayer sensor for all we know? What we do know is it has a fixed f/2.8 aperture (unlike the Mavic 2 Pro which has a 1” 20MP sensor with variable f/2.8-f/11 aperture) so let’s not be taken in by marketing spiel.

It’s easy to swayed by the more pixels the better the camera but it’s not always the case.

I don’t doubt it’s a great camera but to state it is a 48MP camera that is far better the mere 20MP of the Mavic 2 Pro is disingenuous at best and downright false at worst.

So all the folks that have bought the m2z’s since they came on the market , you all should have waited two years and bought an air 2 instead !.
Then shouldn’t the people that have bought the air 2 should have waited till the air 3 comes out !.
I have read of many , many people that are very happy with their zoom many being professional photographers.
I have also read many reviews that sing the praises of the zoom .
Many professionals have both the m2z and the m2 pro so they can pick which one for which shot while sharing the accessories, batteries, controller etc.

Just recently I received my own m2z , I could have waited for the air 2 but I believe I made the right decision.
I think it’s an awesome drone , I also believe that anyone who tries out the zoom will be of the same opinion it’s an awesome drone and it’s had it two years of sorting out the gremlins , something that every new drone including the air 2 goes thru .

I also personally went with M2Z because of it's ability of 2x optical zoom. It just makes a difference when you want to get a good shoot of something that you shouldn't be too close.

Great question I’ve always wondered the same. Not sure why people would buy the Zoom over the Pro but as some have suggested here, I now understand the reasoning.
