how do i tell when i need to replace my props? how often should i replace them?

welcome to the forum ,it all really depends on the conditions you fly in and whether there is any visible damage and also inspect the hub and hinge points for wear, you should check them before each flight look for nicks or surface damage and flex them gently as well there is no exact time for changing them unless they are damaged its really up to you

After watching my friends phantom 4 pro fall out of the sky at 30 feet while it was hovering for 3 minutes, due to a broken prop, I started to do some research.
Drone U amongst others recommends prop replacement every 20 hours of flight time.

its all relative if you are a commercial pilot then it makes sense to have a prop change interval written into your flight manual, but it does not mean that the props were worn out ,you could put on a brand new set and damage them on the first flight, the most important aspect is regular preflight checks looking for damage

That's dangerous advice. A set of props could become damaged after just one hour of use.
