is it a Wi-Fi connection that needed between the Mavic pro or is it something else? I ask because I have an old smartphone that I could maybe use a a dedicated device but don't really know if this phone needs to be activated.

A Wi-Fi connection is only needed if you're flying without a remote controller. When using the remote controller, your mobile device must be connected directly to the port on the left side or bottom of the Mavic remote controller via the appropriate cable for your mobile device.
