Yet another filter question

The ND filter changes from light to darker when you roll it between your thumb and forefinger. What is the proper orientation to install it on the drone camera? Is it just an optical illusion that it gets darker or lighter? Thanks in advance.

I mark my ND filter at the darkest position and align the mark at the top of the camera. I get good results that way but others may do otherwise.
