FAA grants Arlington Police Department permission to fly UAVs

So my town's police department is now flying Inspire and Mavics.

Question is why did they need to have FAA permission to fly under 400 feet?

Seeing as you can here them at 400, maybe they want to be able to go higher? Just a guess.

They may have a need to fly over crowds or fly near first responders? Both of which we are prohibited from doing.

My understanding is that since they are a public safety agency they can get a Certificate of Authorization or Waiver from the FAA in order to fly the UAS which negates the need for the Part 107. They either need one or the other, and maybe its easier to get the COA.

Yes I can, I can see it quite well actually. Secondly, sport mode I can hear it. Guess my senses are better than yours? Don't state facts that are opinions. I bet most hear can see their drone at 400ft.

I can see mine at 400 feet. Can't hear it as there's usually too much going on at the surface around me. Now if I'm 2500 feet out at 400 feet up that's a different story...
