Flying within 5 miles of airport

I live within 5 miles of an airport and make the call every time i fly. I have one concern. I can take off from my backyard without issue but if I initiate a RTH in the zone it says it will just hover and not return to home. Im able to cancel and manually return to home but I have a big concern If the controller would loose connection and it would try to initiate return to home would it return to home or just hover and eventually run out of battery and land. Thanks for the help

Fly about 50' out, turn off the controller and see what happens. make sure the area under it is clear.

Also make sure the area over it is clear since the RTH will probably initiate
