Maybe it has a bad battery? I use a new ipad 5 when I fly and it easily lasts me 6-7 hrs of use. I've never noticed it charging from the controller cable. I typically fly 3-4 batteries per session with my Mavic Pro.
Start out with them both fully charged and they will compliment each other as the power diminishes. Both should easily outlast your drone flight times.

If you're using an FPV device like an iPad or a phone you can record your videos directly to that device or even do a screen record which will show all the Go4 app info around the perimeter like you see in many YouTube videos from drone pilots when they show their flights. For the camera...
It's a good tool for beach patrol but it needs a warning device attached like one of those air horns that can be remotely activated so swimmers can get out of the water when sharks are approaching.
