Two reasons for this... MOST of China, about 2/3rds of the country is mountains. There's also a billion people here and land is extremely expensive, so building up makes a lot of sense. A good observation though.

I was watching a youtube about Yaks, quite interesting. I got the impression the scientist passed through some pretty remote towns or perhaps cities. At least one of those towns was peppered with multistories, it really drove the point home.
