I live in a area with a lot of mountains. I would like to see a software feature that bases the altitude of the drone to the actual ground level it is flying above not on the altitude which the drone took off from.

Any thoughts or information on this?

Thanks :)

Because of what you learn on the 107 training , that is not likely to happen as its a standard that was set in stone by the FAA and map builders alike.. ;)

If you have clear line of site of a level landing area, you can land then restart motors, and it will adjust from that height. Not recommended if you fail to restart or you have a heck of a climb :p

There is a feature on one or more drones that will allow the drone to rise as the land rises, but it will NOT DESCEND as the land drops. Presents a problem!
I use Litchi for mapping purposes. It has a feature that keeps the drone at the same AGL as the land rises and falls.

There's the rub.. if you don't have clear line of sight to actual touchdown.. the drone is going to disconnect and start home in a straight line and that can be a route you don't want to take. I always keep LOS so don't ask how I know ?

Great idea .. all you have to do is come up with a lightweight, cost effective sensor to provide the information.
Until that's available, you'll just have to do what pilots of light aircraft do and estimate.
