Are you making money with your drone?

As a archaeologist and cartographer, my wife’s favorite line from the movie Starman: Guy in Cafe; “what do you do?” Jeff Bridges;”I make maps.” Guy: ”So do you make any money?” Bridges; “I make maps.”

She’s gotten to use it a few times.

Mavic won't work for us as we'd need an upward facing camera for the undersides of bridges - which is the main driver for this; getting a person in a harness under there is usually a massive safety and logistical headache. Also, some of the assets we manage are pretty exposed so wind gusts would definitely be a problem for a smaller drone.

Realistically, for an off the shelf model, we'd be looking at squadon of Matrices and some specialist camera/lens combos, although we're also considering the possibility of getting a custom design done if the cost/benefit can be justified. It's an interesting project...

What if u design a 45 degree mirror to fit on the MP2 camera? I wonder if it could "see" up through the props. Alternatively you could mount a GoPro on top of the battery facing up.

Both would create extra drag, reducing the battery life and ability to operate in stronger winds, plus would be a bit of a hack which isn't really a good look for our clients. Also, since we're not really constrained by budget as long as there's a positive RoI, what we're currently looking at is a series of models.

Ultimately that's likely to be a couple of really high-end ones, maybe four to six Matrices, which would probably be the workhorses of the group, then a number of M2s (probably a mix of M2Es and M2Ps) for the quick and dirty stuff that doesn't need an upward facing camera. For the initial proof of concept trial we're probably looking at getting a Matrice and an M2E then, if that goes to plan, growing the fleet as orders and likely requirements dictate.

Actually, for this kind of purpose I have a special GoPro mount to be able to mount a GoPro on the top of my M2 zoom. That way, I can inspect upward as well as forward or downward. You can find those mount on Amazon, and that will also avoid spending money on a super expensive special drone too

Curious what people are doing to make a little money to support the habit.
I did a traffic study for a client in a rural area showing that the traffic was already backed for a mile on a county road. The client used the images to prove to the county that creating a commercial-size composting plant with semis coming and going on the road 9-5 would make a bad situation much worse.

I am a 107 who has produced footage and stills for film, TV, real estate, construction and the internet.
After multiple sessions (sunsets are not very predictable or long-lasting), I just got 'the money shot' for a client; Malpaso Productions, Clint Eastwood's Company, 2nd Unit - for a feature film in production now.
I work both San Diego and Hollywood / Beverly Hills where I have ongoing projects form a diverse range of clients.
I am contracted to produce footage for two additional feature films currently in pre-production with more in the works.
All of this is with a Mavic Pro (the one I use most), Phantom 3 4K, Mavic 2, a couple of Sparks and soon to purchase an Inspire and just starting with my new FT Aviator.
A true craftsman can take a rusty old hammer and build a mansion while the home handyman can buy a shiny new hammer and flatten his thumb with it.
If you have smooth moves and you have developed using the best settings for D-Log optimized for post production, and you have good marketing and connections - the work is waiting.
I'm proud to say 'this is my career and passion'.
