I haven't flown my Air 3 for about a year. I just charged up the batteries and downloaded the latest upgrade firmware to get ready for tomorrow but now cannot shut down the aircraft. I read somewhere that it's not good to pull the battery out of a powered up device so guess I'll just let the battery run down.

Any suggestions as to what's going on?

You haven't said what you are doing, so the obvious thing to check first is that you are doing it properly.
From your manual ....
Powering On/Off
Press the power button once and then press again and hold for two seconds to power the battery on or off.

That's a short press followed by a longer press.

The battery ran down sometime overnight. I pulled it out and it recharges ok. Last night, short press followed by long press, as I have done over the years would only result in two beeps and no shut down. When I continued this process and hold the power button longer, the battery light would start sequencing, running from one light to another. Looking at the controller I found the screen with the "pair aircraft" or something like that illuminated. I pressed that and continuous controller beeping would commence saying to hold down the aircraft power button for X seconds. After that, all seemed normal as in ready to fly, no alarms, no calibrations required.
So now let's shut it down, go to bed and fly tomorrow. No such luck. Did this over and over for almost an hour going back and forth with the scenario described above. Searched the forum for a similar problem and found nothing and so, here I am.
Until I can get it figured out, I'd just like to know; if I encounter this again, motors not running, only the fan, with aircraft powered on and I can't shut it downs, is pulling the battery a safe way to shut down?

My Air 3 did that once about a year ago, and after trying the standard shutdown procedure several times with no success, I pulled the battery out. Left it out maybe 15 seconds or so, then put it back in the drone and everything behaved normally. Never experienced a recurrence since then, so I have no idea what caused it.

Well, I did put the battery back in this afternoon and fired it up and was able to shut it down. Went flying and took some photos and everything seems to work as it always has. Problem gone. Resolution???? No idea. But apparently I can take out the battery to shut it down if all else fails without causing any harm.
