why won't the firmware update? It keeps asking me continue download, it acts like its downloading for about 2 seconds then stops and then says continue download over and over?

It's just testing your persistence. It took me 3 tries and finally got it. FW updating has always been a challenge with DJI products.

If I'm out on the mountain and get a required firmware update and can't connect to internet or wifi am I just out of luck and not able to fly?

Firmware updates are optional. Just ignore the prompt and keep flying until you're ready to install the update.
