Whatever your take on compass calibration, you do need to be careful not to make a worse calibration by being within magnetic interference. There is a certain tolerance before you'll be notified of a problem.
That's true, although I can only recall one posted example of a bad calibration that passed, and it only caused somewhat subtle flight problems - slow, uncommanded yaw as the FC attempted to resolve compass/IMU disagreements.
