Whatever your take on compass calibration, you do need to be careful not to make a worse calibration by being within magnetic interference. There is a certain tolerance before you'll be notified of a problem.

That's true, although I can only recall one posted example of a bad calibration that passed, and it only caused somewhat subtle flight problems - slow, uncommanded yaw as the FC attempted to resolve compass/IMU disagreements.

If you do it too often, you increase the odds of a bad calibration, even if the results are not drastic as a fly-away or crash. Even a subtle drift can be a big nuisance.
