I'm a new pilot, with a Mini 3 and RC controller. I'm struggling to get used to Mode 2 controller configuration. I've changed to Mode 1, and it feels much more intuitive to me to have forward, back, left, right on the left control stick. Maybe because I'm left handed, or maybe not.

In any event, my concern is that I will regret this down the road after muscle memory has fully set in. Anyone out there with stories good or bad of having used something other than the default configuration for stick movement? The only immediate downside I can think of is that tutorials need to be converted, and those "epic shot" motions rely on a specific pattern. Maybe there are others...

I fly RC model aircraft. Although somewhat different from a drone’s mode 2, most pilots fly mode 2, as do I. A few old timers fly mode 1. I would not think of ever trying to fly mode 1 in RC, but with drones, if you are unsure or get confused, just let go!
Do whatever floats your boat. Try them both.

On camera drones, If you've played FPS videogames or any 3D videogame in general, Mode 3 will give you the best results as it's the most intuitive. It moves exactly the same as any FPS character but with up and down.

Else, you'll have to go through a learning curve if you've not flown RC copters or planes before.

Same, been flying RC for years, I'm left handed but I've always flown mode 2 from way back in the day. Mode 2 for my drones as well. Had no real with a 3 channel transmitter.

I've never flown RC planes before - I did have an RC car, but it was a really long time ago, so it doesn't count for anything really, and in any event it was a forward/back, left/right controller. I have a Playstation 3, so that tells you how much I play video games. I think over Christmas, I played for a cumulative 2 hours, and that's the first time its been turned on in a couple of years at least.

I can see Mode 3 being a good option. I think I'm going to continue with Mode 1 this weekend, then try Mode 3 the time after and see how I get on and probably decide between the two. Both seem on the surface to be more intuitive to me, we'll see what happens in practice I guess.

I think I feel a bit better about not necessarily going with the standard. As a photographer, my camera is highly customized for the way I work. It would be pointless giving it to someone else to use. But then again, I'm really not going to do that. Either with my cameras or my drone. With cameras, I have muscle memory with my set up, and would probably struggle a bit to take someone else's camera and get good shots, but I don't do that either.
