Critical battery auto landing

Has anyone had an issue with the MP2 saying “critical battery, now landing” when their is 10% battery left. I was flying about 200 yards from my house and it said that and I lost communication with it. I couldn’t stop it and I thought 10% would be plenty to come back from that far. Needless to say I took off running down my street as fast as I could in full on panic mode. I had no idea where it landed. It could have been on the train tracks, side of the road , middle of the road or someone’s yard. I was out of touch with it for about 5 minutes but it felt like forever. I thought I was going to have a heart attack ‍♂️. I ended up finding it in the middle of the road at an intersection. [emoji30]. A car drove past and slammed its brakes on when I was about 50 yards away. Passenger jumped out and looked like he was going to grab it but it sounded like he ran over it. I was heartbroken and panicked at the same time. I yelled “Hey! Did you run it over”? He just looked at me, jumped back in and took off. I completely expected to walk up and see it smashed all over the road and was practically in tears. So I walk up and it was just sitting there perfectly fine. Needless to say I was very relieved but out of breath and thought I was gonna have a heart attack. Lol. We have power lines and train track power lines right there so I’m thinking the magnetic field could be disrupting communication with it. Either way I thought 10% should have been plenty to fly back. But I was wrong.
Check out the DJIGO 4 menu and you'll find a "Find My drone" selection. Tap on that and a map will come up of the area where it made emergency landing. That should get you within 50 feet of where it made the emergency landing. I can vouch that it does work!

I lost communication with it and was unable to do so.
Well you lost communication becasue it went down to land, but had you prevented it from doing so by pushing the stick up as soon as you saw the "landing" message you wouldn't have lost comms.

Don't disagree. The only fault with that is that DJI does not include one with the drone and the person needs to go hunt for it.

That is, they don't include the full manual as they should.
Welcome to the modern age! How many companies provide the full manual with the product today - not many I would guess! Most now rely on the fact that the customer will access the document online - cost saving!

10% on the M2 will get you over 2000m, just hold the left stick up or set battery type to 3 with DJI Assistant in debug mode.

Wow Lolo, that takes some nerves.... So what does changing the battery type to 3 do? You still had the auto land kick in at 10%

That video was with stock parameters and I held the left stick up to counter the auto land descent.

If you change the M2 to battery type 3, you'll still get the annoying beep at 10% but the AC won't descend.

The difference is that my TV or fridge is not going to crash or fly away if I don't read the manual. Your car could (well, not _fly_ away).... and it comes with a full manual.

I did not know you could do any of that. I’ve inquired about an extension antenna for my car to be able to fly while sitting in my car for P.I. work but can’t find anything. I’m reading about sigma repeaters and amps but it’s all talk from what I gather.

Your work as a Private Investigator? First thing is to get your FAA Part 107 so that you can make money flying your drone in furtherance of your business.

My Mavic air did the same thing while flying over the ocean with 42% battery left. Checked flight log and battery went from 42% to 0% in less than a second. Luckily it landed in about a foot of water. The wind blew it close enough to shore so I was able to retrieve it. DJI blamed ME for it and I had to use Refresh to get a new one. BS!

There's a logical reason they don't include a full paper manual aside from cost savings. With firmware and app updates, as time goes on, the instructions in the original manual can become too outdated.

More up to date manuals and tutorials are available from the Dji Go 4 app.

I had the auto land initiate at 10%. I overrode the feature and continued to land manually. I think I was on 1% when I finally touched down. Before people get mad, the drone as at an altitude of 10ft and distance of 15ft when the alarm sounded. I immediately descended to 4ft and walked with it over grass to a landing site. I’ve since heard that it is bad for the batteries lives to run below 10%. They are high tech bits of kit (even the batteries). The next time I was quicker and manually landed at 8% after overriding.
Bellaflys. You should plan your flight so that at 10% your Mavic is virtually overhead and in a clean and safe landing approach. Any risk of hazards or a head wind and you need more margin.
Not sure about your country but I mine you broke several CAA rules. Fly safely Bella. Happier landings ;-)

These manuals would only be as old as how long it took to sell the Mavic. Perhaps a few months at worst but in most cases, they would be uptodate. Truth is, 99.9% of the manual does not change at any time.

I have a Mavic Pro 1 and the first year there were frequent updates, bug fixes and feature changes. Features were added and removed, icons moved around, defaults changed. The full manual went through at least five revisions. Things finally settled down near the end of 2017, over a year after the MP1 was released. There have been a few more updates since then but just bug fixes and goggle related, no need to further update the manual.

And, there IS documentation that comes in the box. All of the basic safety and operational information is there, including links to the full manual and tutorials.

The problem isn't lack of a full paper manual in the box, it's that many new owners don't bother to thoroughly read and/or comprehend what IS provided before taking flight.

There were really not many changes at all that would affect using the Mavic. I've attached the comparison below (it was too large to upload so I added a link to the files). Nothing of huge value really changed. Things like an icon changing or moving is no big deal. DJI can still refer people to the online manual but at least they have something that is 99% accurate in the meantime.

Lack of a manual _is_ part of the problem. People tend to look through what is in the box and assume this is what they need to fly.

What makes you think it would be any different if there was a full manual in the box? If they can't take the time to read the few pages that are in the documentation that's included, they certainly aren't going to take the time to slough through a full 100 page manual.

Besides, no manufacturer of a product that can be changed through software or firmware provides full, paper manuals anymore. That's been the case since at least the early 2000's.

We're going to have to agree to disagree. If someone crashes their drone because they didn't bother to read the safety instructions, that's on them. It even says on the box, Danger! Read the instructions before operating. Whether there's a full manual in the box or not is irrelevant. It would make no difference.

Want to do a range test SAFELY? (No drones lost, no heart attacks, no fights with DJI)

This is how.

Find yourself a nice wide field with nobody in it, go in the center of it, fly your drone in circles round you at such radius the drone is always inside the field and also LOS.
Ignore/override all warnings that you get until you get critical warning. Here depending on how adventurous you feel you can just lower your drone to a couple of feet from the ground and continue or land. If you choose the former you can observe the drone doing a last ditch landing.

This is what Dustin Dunnill (and people like that) should always do if he/they genuinely just wanted to do a range test, but the truth of the matter is, he/they want to do a bit of drama as well at the expense of our having to exercise our heart resuscitation techniques time and time again. And why not, this is what horror films work off! He can do his seemingly brave acts because he has the experience of knowing when not to start panicking and how to deal with unexpected events without panicking. If you do not have the same experience, I should not try to copy him because you will panic. Lesson: panic and best way to recover from a situation don't go together.
