These guys were clearly in the wrong from what little reporting we have so far so it will be interesting to see what the state charges end up being and the penalties.....before the FAA gets involved. As usual will wait for the details and so far so good....I just don't like the way news reported it and I especially don't like the way LEO said don't fly anywhere near an airport. Which is why we keep hearing about the 5 mile rule repeated even though it is yesterday's news. I fly near an airport with LAANC all the time, it's not the end of the world. Granted, I've never flow onto airport property but let's see what these guys have to say when they get out of jail and face a judge. I dunno, maybe the one guy is spying....interesting comments on that videos.

You're right ... you dunno.
Why would you think they might have been spying .. at Fort Lauderdale airport?
There's nothing to spy on there.
There are plenty of things to 'spy' on there. It may or may not have been the airport itself. Perhaps they were 'spying' on something more specific like a particular flight, plane (not necessarily a commercial airliner), routine/process, crew/worker(s), fuel location/transport/operations, off-limits location inside the airfield, security, etc...
Also, they could've been testing the airport security & LEO authorities' detection and/or response to a potential 'threat' and/or emergency.

It could be just about anything - you (and i) "dunno" either. But to say there's  nothing to spy on there is disingenuous and just plain wrong.

They just look like two idiots with to much time and cash I don't think they will have to worry about either of those for a bit.

"23-year-old Tony Wang and 32-year-old Carlos San Luis...."

I am almost sure DHS and FBI have been notified. You forget the times we live in. 😳

You have an overactive imagination and a tendency toward paranoia.
I've flown in and out of FLL several times and seen what's there.
You can drive around and see it all from the ground or look at it on Google Earth.
There's no need to use a drone to spy there and there's nothing worth spying on.

I especially don't like the way LEO said don't fly anywhere near an airport.

To be fair, I think it's good advice for most people to just avoid the situation entirely. I highly doubt the average drone owner knows or considers anything more than the ultra basic things in the TRUST test, if they even took it. I think the guy is mostly frustrated with the absurdity of this happening again and again ...

If you know what you're doing and how to stay safe, great. But I highly doubt that represents the "average" drone owner. It's one of those "Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should" things to me.

I have to quote Forrest Gump, "Stupid is as Suptid does."

I hope they get the maximum penalties for their stupidity. Hopefully, others will think twice before doing it.
It is foolishness like this that creates havic for all drone pilots
