Air 2 Dinosaurs and Drones? Yes sir!

As a community, we capture some amazing photographs and video with our drones. While not in that category, it is not every day you see a picture of a life-sized dinosaur in the forum. There is an outdoor drive-thru dinosaur exhibit in town charging $50 per car so I thought I would give it a quick look with my MA2.

That's fun. When I first saw the picture I thought it was a table-top display, then I realized it was a parking lot. Great illusion....
It 100% looks like a table-top display. I thought it would be fun to film the dinosaurs but I think this is one instance filming from ground level is much better than filming from the sky.

Great way to see it without paying the entry fee.

That looks like a fun experience for the kids. All our dinosaurs are big metal objects. There are multiple big metal sculptors of various creatures at a place called Borrego Springs. Very hard to get decent drone footage as there are lots of people around and if you get too close my MavicPro becomes a bit hard to control due to all the metal. Going back out later during the summer when the temperature reaches 130 and only idiots venture forth.

I actually had every intention of taking my kid to see the exhibit. I went down to the site the night before the exhibit opened since I thought filming dinosaurs would be cool. I was disappointed by the exhibit and it turns out the drone really doesn't offer a very interesting perspective.

A competitor comes to town in about a month and I will try to film that exhibit. I have a few lessons learned that might make a video more interesting to watch. I am going to focus on a handful of close-ups of the larger models rather than trying to capture the scope of the entire exhibit.

That looks awesome in the desert setting....sure beats a parking lot and construction cones. How does the MavicPro handle the 130 degree heat? I have a MA2, it was fine in the 90+ degree heat but my iPhone turned out to be the weak link. It overheated, the screen dimmed and then the touchscreen lagged. I can't wait to see your Borrego Springs video!!!

Those were taken last February, so it wasn't as hot. As there were lots of tourists all wanting to take selfies next to the giant metal statues, I would have to sit and wait until I could launch. I did have a close runaway when shooting a bunch of metal statues of grape pickers. The metal does effect the drone. I have shot in 120-130 degree heat before and really didn't have any problems. The most time each launch was about 10 minutes and then bring it back to cool off in the car. I have taken a lot of footage at the Salton Sea where it gets to those extreme temps. During the summer heat very few tourists. Here is a shot of the grape pickers. I wanted to get a close video of them, zooming around them, when it started to take off on it's own. Was able to bring it down with no problems.
