I tried everything but nothing worked to remove the 500m max altitude. When I reloaded the latest version it actually says it's not possible to reinstall an earlier version. It came original, secondhand, with the latest version so guess the role back software I downloaded off the 'net is out of date.

Yes. In fact it's significantly easier on a Mac - none of that fiddling about editing main.js.
