Hi,
I'm really confused about the DJI cellular dongle 2?
Do you need a sim card in the dongle 2 and your phone to be able to get 4G connection?
And if so, do both of the sim cards need to have data in them?

Please can someone clarify? Thanks.

You need a sim card. You don't need a phone. The data sim in the dongle is all you need to establish a connection for your controller.

Sorry, your info is not correct.

You need to have a sim card in the dongle AND internet connection to the RC. The internet for the RC can come via router wifi, mobile/phone hotspot or you can have a second dongle in the RC, with a second sim card.

There are 2 versions of the Dongle 2 as well - one for the Chinese mainland and one for the rest of the world where connecting to and using the 4G network is allowed.

I'm in the US. What you describe is not possible here. How do you think the internet connection is established? Through the dongle in the controller.

The dongle 2 needs a 4G enabled Ism that has data to connect to the Dji Servers. The RC needs a data connection either via wifi or mobile hotspot to your phone to be able to communicate with the dongle 2 in the drone. If the RC has no Data connection then 4G flight is not possible.

Sorry, one more question.
Why does the Dongle 2 use so much data to operate?
Is there a hack so it can use less data?
In South Africa where I live, we have one of the most expensive 4G data subscription services in the world.

Thanks to everyone for your feedback.

Coming from South Africa I know exactly what you mean. Maybe try Telkom data or Cell C as it might be the cheapest but I have been away for a while. Unfortunately, there is no way to reduce the Data consumption. Best advice I can give is turn of 4G connection and when you see your RC connection dropping to 2 bars then turn on 4G, this will reduce the data transmission back and forth from drone to RC.

I saw this on the DJI website.
What does this mean?
"The ground unit will consume a similar amount of data".
Does it mean you will use the same amount of data if you not using Wi-Fi?
Correct?

Yes. Note that this is a two way data communication, one side has to receive the data, where the other part is sending. Do not think as a phone call where the caller pays the cost. No.

I remove the sim card from my phone and pop in to the dongle. If I'm flying from my house, I connect the controller to my home WiFi. If I'm out of the house, I use the WiFi hotspot from my wife's phone to connect to the controller. Both methods work really well assuming the 4G coverage is good. Before I travel to a place I want to fly, I check the coverage map for that area first. Fortunately we're both on Vodafone, so it's easier to plan ahead!
