China Drone Maker Steps Up Security After U.S. Army Ban

"(Reuters) - Chinese drone maker SZ DJI Technology Co Ltd is tightening data security on its drones after the U.S. Army ordered its members to stop using DJI drones because of "cyber vulnerabilities," a company official told Reuters on Monday.

The privately held Shenzhen-based company is speeding deployment of a system that allows users to disconnect from the internet during flights, making it impossible for flight logs, photos or videos to reach DJI's computer servers, Brendan Schulman, vice president of policy and legal affairs at DJI, said in an interview.

The security measure had been in the works for several months but DJI said it is bringing it out sooner than planned because of an Army memo earlier this month that barred service members from using DJI drones."

I'm curious about just whom the security is against, are there hackers using our uav's or are uav users hacking their own and creating what they perceive to be a security risk, which begs, for whom?

Are reverse engineers going to find something or are there real hackers that want to see the scenery and sunsets I'm recording? So many questions this article begs...

I think that's a soldier with a non-army kit type issue dude.
The army is famous for not allowing soldiers much of anything that isn't regular issue.

But still, if we went to war with China tomorrow, they might have a lot of "Eyes in the Sky", ala 'The Dark knight' mobile phone sonar thingy.

Got that Maggot!

The US government should stop using any Communist Chinese products, pure and simple. The PRC cannot be trusted with anything to do with foreign government or military intelligence.

It's actually kind of surprising that at the start they allowed them to sell them in the US without first doing some serious checks. There is no way a USA company could make a drone that sends back photos and videos to the USA and then sell thousands of them in China.

I mean look what happened to Google, the Chinese were smart enough to know it was gathering loads of info on them so they found a reason to Ban it. It's just common sense!
DJI needs to remove this stuff and get back to developing great drones.

Or some other company developing great, better drones.
It's like DJI is what Tamiya was with the Frog & the Hornet, etc.
Where is Kyosho to improve upon?

The mavic really is the least of your problems if you want to be paranoid. Just think of all those games consoles, TV's, phones, video cameras, stills cameras, laptops, tablets, and watches just crammed with Chinese technology. Then you can move on to the routers, switches and other networking gubbins.

In a few years it will be your washer, cooker, fridge and home control system. Then there is the CCTV system that your county uses to watch the roads etc, control systems in power stations, water treatment and electricity supply.

I'd say too late, we're all using it right now.......most of those items that mentioned.
