Hello, I'm not too sure how to word this, but I have been searching feverently and can't seem to get consistent information. I am a new drone owner (mavic mini). In the dji fly app my house is in class d airspace, I confirm this through dji fly app and unlock it. Do I still need to get airspace authorization, or does the fly app sort of do this for you? I'm just a recreational pilot or hobbyist.

Currently, you may not be able to fly in Class D airspace. We are waiting for a firmware update from DJI that will allow us to "self-unlock" the drone to fly there. Expected release for the firmware is "late December." Depending on where you are in the Class D airspace, you may or may not be able to get off the ground.

The FAA approval is separate and currently not connected to the DJI application. If you are in Class D airspace, you might be able to get an automatic authorization via text using an application like Kittyhawk.io. (Assuming your airspace is using LAANC.)

So the steps ... once the firmware update is released...
  1. Apply for LAANC authorization using an application like Kittyhawk (free).
  2. Fire up the drone and self-unlock to fly.
Lots of information available online with a Google search.
