No and this is really really important.

The DJI system is their own unrelated to the process of getting legal authorization from the FAA. In many cases you may need to do both but DJI’s system is less restrictive so in most instances you need FAA authorization through LAANC via AirMap or Kittyhawk but DJI won’t require you to do anything at all. This is why you should check AirMap or KittyHawk before every flight.

This is the major criticism of DJI’s system in that that make it seem so official and make you jump through so many hoops that people think they’ve done what they need to do when in reality they haven’t at all.

If DJI is making you do the code thing there’s almost a 100% chance you also need to get authorization through LAANC.

Not really true. There are many small airports in uncontrolled airspace where you need to do the DJI unlock but LAANC is not required. DJIs authorization zones usually extend a few miles beyond the runways, even in uncontrolled airspace.

@spudster I left NFM (my back property line is the county line between Lee & Charlotte) a week ago Thursday, getting back to NH last Saturday.... it was cleared before I left..... I was flying a C172 out of PGD not long ago and flew down that way before hanging a left and going up river just before getting to the Class C outer band.... I saw it from a distance but didn't give it a lot of thought since see it from the bridge (41) all the time..... quite a few derelict boats in that area on the north side of the bridge between the bridges.

That’s true. I was thinking around towered airports.
